Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company Limited gILVER JUBILEE 1915-1940 We publish below an outline of the Rangitaiki Da'iry Company s founding growth, and present day organisation. From its inception in 1919, this company has developed to such an extent that it is now the second largest, and one of the most progressive. Da.iry Companies in New Zealand. ON the 28th day of April 1915, a meeting of Rangitaiki. Plains settlers was held at the residence of Mr. John William Sumner. Those present were Messrs. W. Taylor, R. J. Bentley, C. J. Luxton Snr., C.J. Luxton Jnr., G. Greenup, A. C. Martin, A. L. Luke, J. Judge, E. Hooper, Joseph Smiith, F. E. Walker, F. L. Sumner, A. B. Barr and J. W. Sumner. Mr Sumner was elected Chairman. The meeting resolved: — (1) • THAT a Co-operative Dairy Factory be established in the district. (2) THAT a Factory site be selected. (3) THAT the Provisional Directors consist of seven members; viz., Messrs J. Wm. Sumner, G. Greenup, C. J. Luxton Jnr., A. C. Martin, R. J. Bentley, W. Taylor and J. R. Judge. A FACTORY site was selected at what was known as Otarere (now Awakeri). On this property stands the first Factory Manager's original cottage and part of the Factory building, this latter being used to-day to garage several of the Company's trucks. Mr W. R. Knight was appointed the Company's first Factory Manager. The position was advertised as follows: — Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company, Limited WORKING MANAGER WANTED FOR NEW CHEESE FACTORY. Greenup, A. C. Martin, A. G. Sparks. YOUR Directors have pleasure in laying before you the first annual Report and Balance Sheet. The position (is not perhaps as satisfactory as coulcl have been desired in view of the high prices ' that have been received for the output; the actual net profit being £414 4s 4d, after allowing £119 for depreciation and writing off £29 18s 7d of the preliminary expenses of the Company. As against the high prices that have been received, however, the prices of all classes of good,s have increased to a large extent owing to the war, which has mad,e the cost of production almost proportionately heavy. The Government requisitioned from the Company's output 15 tons of first grade, full-cream cheese the price for the above being per lb. f.o.b. ocean steamer. The 15 tons was duly consigned'from the factory but lit has been only recently ascertained that 21 crates thereof were second grade. This was not ascertained until after we had sold the balance of our output to Messrs. A. S. Pate'rson and Company, and consequently thte Company has failed in satisfying the Government requisition by li tons. The rest of the output was sold to Messrs A. S. Paterson and Co. at different times at prices 7id, B|d, and 9d. ' -.on * t, -u i, ij" mi The total number of suppliers throughout the season was 13, all of whom are shareholders. The amount of milk received was 1,412,357 lbs, which yielded 57,229 lbs of butter-fat. The total amount of cheese manufactured was 132,400 lbs. _ _ You will be asked.to appoint three directors, two in place of two (to be chosen by lot) of the present directors, and one in place of Mr J. W. Sumner, who resigned in March last. You will also be asked to appoint an audit 0l for the coming year. C. J. LUXTON, Chairman.
