HOME DEFENCE

LOCAL INITIATIVE ROLL STEADILY GROWS ) The Hon. R. Semple's statement of his intention to organise a home defence unit incorporating everybody was received with something approaching relief in Whakatane, where for a long time the feeling lias existed that something should be done in that direction. Some weeks ago a register was opened at the BEACON Office for those willing to serve in an active capacity should the need arise and this roll met with an instantaneous and effective response, town and country residents adding their names to the list. It is now possible that when the Hon. R. Semple's scheme is organised in Whakatane there will be at least a nucleus of" the district's unit. The proposed corps allows for district quotas and Whakatane's will probably be ready instantly. The register remains open at this office.
