RUGBY FOOTBALL
RANGITAIKI'S FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON SOUTH AUCKLAND'S 13-<> VICTORY The Rangitaiki representatives suffered their first defeat of the season when they went down to South Auckland at Matata on Saturday by a nil to 13 margin. The visiting team had a pack which was all the way equal to the Blue and Black vanguard and had a definite superiority in the backs, especially in the three-quarter line. Though the heavy conditions made for solid forward work, it was the South Auckland backs who turned the tables. The ground was in particularly good order after the heavy rain Which fell on Thursday, Friday and prior to the game, but showers ■Which came during the first half and during the initial stages of the second spell made the ball greasy and nullified any attempt at fast, open play. It is on the cards that had conditions been ideal, of a nature enjoyed by Rangitaiki in their previous representative games this season, the result might well have been different. As it was, Rangitaiki were forced to adopt an unusual role, that of defence, for the major portion of the game.
