Rider for Black Thread. B. Morris was to have ridden the Gisborne representative, Black Thread, in the \Y r inter Cup to be run on Tuesday, but having sustained a broken collarbone, the mount will now be taken by W4 Jenkins, who, it may be said, handles the Mimetic gelding exceptionally Well. : . Bred for Speed. Included in the .Winter Cup ac.ccptances but also engaged in minor events at the National fixture, is the filly School Girl, which is bred on speed lines of the highest. She is by Paper .Money from Air Vaals, by Tractor from Callbird, by Pallas from Dccoy by Medallion. Her running is sure to be keenly watched at Riccarton next Aveek. An Unfortunate Trip. The Takanini candidate,. Dauber, trained by A.' Tinker, left for Rlccarton last Avcek to' compete in the. G.N. Steeples, in which lie was ex- | peetcd to have a. fine chance of at least being in the money. On Saturday lie competed in the Hoineby Steeplechase at the Christchurch Hunt ClulV fixture, and suffered ,a breakdown. , , . ( Good Showing. • 1 Streamline had his first race in the Longbeach Hurdles at Riccarton on Saturday since' Avinning the Great Northern Htirdles in June last, and he made!- a really good showing AA'ith 11.6 to get second to TidcAvaitcr, to Avhom he Avas conceding 161b, I,n the Grand National Hurdles he has 10.12, or 121b more than he had in the Great Northern Hurdles, and the race on Saturday should do much, to improve him. Streamline should be in the tnoncA' next Aveek. A Good Trial. Padishah, after his good second Avith 12.13 in the Homeby Steeplechase on Saturday at Riccarton, will lose none of his admirers in the Grand National ! Steeplechase, in which he has 12.6, or 151b more than last year. However, Padishah's effort shows that he has quite recovered from his race in the Wellington Steeplechase, and he should again be one of the most troublesome to head off at tiie finish of the Grand National. The Cardinal Resumes. The Night Raid-Palcstrina representative, The Cardinal, has resumed track Avork at Matamata. Last season he started off in fine style by winning the AA'ondalc Cup, and high hopes Avere then entertained that he would be quite one of the best handicap performers in the Dominion, as might easily be expected Avlicn his pedigree lines Avere taken into consideration. But The Cardinal quickly lost form and from February Avas allotted an extended spell. It iioav remains to be seen whether this has had a beneficial effect, and if it has he avill win races of some importance this season. Wiritejr- Cup Trial.; Grey Honour did best of tlie Winter Cup horses in the Brabazon Han dicap, at Riccarton on Saturday, winning easily from St. Cloud and Black Thread, Avhich had a hard tussle for the minor places. Grey Honour has shown in and out form this winter, but galloped up to his best on this occasion, though the extra furlong of the Winter Cup is likely to trouble liim. St. Cloud was not promiment earls', but finished exceptionally Avell to beat Black Thread by a head, and Avill be hard to beat in sprint races. Black Thread made a bold showing, but more weight to carry and a furlong further to go avill not help him in tlie Winter Cup.
