OHOPE AFFAIRS
PROGRESS AND RATEPAYERS' LEAGUE DEDICATION OF ROAD Ohope interests were under review last Thursday evening when at a meeting of the recently constituted Progress and Rate payers' League, various matters appertaining to improvements at the beach were discussed. In the absence of the president (Mr A. J. Canning) Mr W. Sullivan was \ oted to the chair. The question of [improving the frontage road (1 to 53) was introduced and it was decided that as no olficial move could be made by the County Council until the road was dedicated that the League take steps to secure a petition signed by 75 per cent of the section holders for presentation to the Council. Messrs Sullivan, F. Lysaght and J. Kilvington were appointed for the prosecution of the canvass. Southern Camp Area. Mr Brebner reported that steps I would be taken in the near future for planting the southern camping area in Ngaio trees and generally put ting it in order for use in the coming season. A comprehensive plan of ! the beach was now being drawn up and would be available for the information of the League in the near future. A sub-committee consisting ot Messrs W. Goodwin, G. Mahy, G. ' Rand and F. B. Cutler was appointed to go into the matter of tree-plant-ing on the beach ih conjunction with the County Council, and authorised to spend up to £5 thereon. ' Trawling on Beach. 1 I Mr G. Mahy mentioned the habit . of certain trawlers coming almost to ( the breakers and covering the beach 5 from end to end. These methods he j claimed had resulted in killing the { shore fishing and thereby destroying an asset which had in the past ( brought many visitors to the beach. , s He stated that as he understood it, j it was legal for trawlers under 40ft. to come within the three mile limit and drag the feeding grounds which j skirted the beach. This was very un- f fair to the residents who enjoyed a little line fishing during the season. J Other speakers agreed and it was decided to write to the Marine Department enquiring the position as it related to trawling at Ohope. < General. It was left with the president and ( secretary to draw up a constitution ( for submission to a future meeting, j Mr Brebner stated that the County ] Council had agreed to the limitation of the' speed of cars on the beach, ] and the limit between Bluett's and ] the point was now 20 miles an hour. The secretary reported the successful initiation of the Plunket service which had commenced a month ago 1 and was greatly appreciated. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair, to Mr C. McCready (CoUnty representative) and to Mr N. V. Creagor for the use of the hall.
