MANY ON LEAVE IN WHAKATANE Enjoying a leave of about two weeks, many of the Third Echelon trainees are seen in Whakatnne. Apart from those whose homes are in the town, arc camp comrades spending their leave in the homes hospitably opened to them. Some of the men appear to find the days of ease rather long after the strenuous camp life but they spend a lot of time in looking up friends and acquaintances.

THE FIRST DIVISION DETAILS OF REGISTER A CROWING TOTAL About 100,000 men who fall into the category' of First Division Reservists under the National Servicescheme have ro far returned Part 2 of the social security form, which is the brsis of compulsory service. On Census figures there should be several thousand more men eligible for classification in the First Division and tlie.se men will lay themselves open to the severe penalties prescribed if they have not furnished the necessary details by the time the Proclamation enrolling the mem bers o'■ the First Division is issued. The figure of 100,000 so far available includes forms supplied by men already in the Dominion's armed forces, that is to say, men already mobilised and those actually attested but not called up, but it does not include aliens or naturalised British subjects. Oificers of the National Service Department have been engaged, for some time past, in clearing the First Division register of the names of men already attested, and this task is now almost completed. The next step will be the issue of the Proclamation enrolling the First Division, which, in general, is to consist of single men, natural-born British sub jects between the ages of 19 and 45. Within seven days of the issue of the Proclamation, the date, of which has not yet been indicated, reservists will be required to notify any change of address, and certificates of enrolment will then be issued.
