OBITUARY
MR JOHN GREEN The death occurred at his residence on Wednesday of Mr John Green, aged ninety-seven. Mr Green was born at YoughaI r County Cork, Ireland, on November VI, 1842.and after a period at school he joined the National Bank at the neighbouring town of Mallow. In 1864 he sailed "for New Zealand in the "British Trident," which piade a particularly fast passage for those days of eighty-four days. Arriving towards the end of the Maori wars, Mr Green dkl not see service in the military forces but several of his fellow passengers enlisted and saw some fighting. Shortly after landing at Auckland Mr Green established a connection in the drapery business, and would walk out every morning to Onehuriga Avith a basket of goods strapped on his head, selling his .wares 011 the way. In those days7%itit- a. road which was nothing more than a track cut through the bush, this was no mean feat. Later Ml* Green started a drapery business in 1 Vic-> toria Street, Auckland, and he was there until, he came to Whakatane about twenty years ago. He conducted the same trade here until the business was sold. Until he suffered an attack of pleu risy about twelve months ago, Mtf Green had had no serious illness in his life and until that time had regularly walked to church. His sound I health was demonstrated on the occasion of his ninety-seventh birthday, when a BEACON representative found him sawing firewood with all the vigour of youth. Mr Green's wife died about seven years ago and of the family often/ six survive. There are fifteen grandchildren and twenty great-grand-children. A sister, three years older, is believed to be still living in Youghal.
MRS C. A. HEAD Sympathy will be felt for Mr-C, A. Head ancl family in the death of Mrs Ivy Gwendolyn Head, whose death occurred at her residence, James Street, on Saturday, July 27. Mrs Head leaves a family of four, a son, Arthur, who is training with the Third. Echelon, and three daugh ters, Vivienne, Gwenyth and Yerna. Mrs Head had been an invalid for many years but had borne her suffering patiently and was always ready to welcome cheerfully her many friends.
MRS W. W. KIRKBRIDE ' Advice has been received of the death in Auckland on Tuesday night of Mrs W. W. Kirkbride, late of Opatiki and Whakatane, and mother oE Miss Jean Kirkbride and Mrs H. Kayes, Gisborne. Mrs Kirkbride who had been ill for a long time, had many friends in the Bay of Plejity and Gisborne districts.
