TRAWLING OFF THE COAST, 1 MATTER FOR CONCERN AT* MATATA While attending a football match at Matata some weeks ago a BE'A!CON representative's attention was drawn to a fishing launch, then operating close inshore. It was stated at the time that the launch frequently trawled in the vicflnity and it was alleged that a sack was( hung over the number to prevent identification^ The complaint was based on the general opinion that there exists a three-mile limit for fishing off all coasts and- it was requested that some publicity should be given to the matter. Inquiries made since the complaint show that the regulations have been altered and that instead of the old practise of maintaining a general three-mile limit the areas prohibited are now defined specifically, as, for instance, in the case .of Whakatane, where, states the regulations, fishing may not be carried out within the arc of a circle 'with! a radius of one mile from the flagStation, Other areas are named 'and the prohibition stated but there is no mention of Matata and it must be presumed that trawling inshore is permitted.
