Early' Lambs Appear. The earliest lambs to be seen arc. on Mr A. Woodberry's property "Homefield," Otakiri, where they have, been arriving since JuLy 4th with quite a percentage of twinsPipe Band's Visit. The Whakatane Caledonian Society's Pipe Band will visit Opotiki to-morrow to assist in raising funds lor patriotic purposes. All transport arrangements have been made by members of the band, which will arrive in time to give a display in the afternoon. In the evening this band will attend a dance and prefsent items there. Menace of Sheep Worrying. With the commencement of thef new lambing season it has been reported in several districts that several instances of 'worrying' have occurred. The whole question of the safety of flocks at this vitaltime lies in the thoughtfulness of neighbours who are asked to ensure that their dogs are kept under proper control and chained up at nights. 'Flu.' Many instances of 'flu' effecting the business staffs of shops in Whakatane have been reported. The cases in the town must run into hundreds. In most cases however the subjects arc suffering from nothing more than a heavy cold, to cure which however it is necessary to exercise some care. Ohope Reserves. The Works Committee reported to the County Council that it had inspected the Crown Reserves at Ohope and it recommended that the Lands and Survey Department be requested to include the several reserve areas as an addition to the Domain. The Committee had in mind that eventually it might be' possible to sell some of the present Crown Reserves, the funds from such a sale to be utilised in the purchase of a consolidated Ohope Re*, serve.
From One Farm. The liberal response to the appeal for clothing foi refugees was nod confined to the town. An instance has been reported of a Thornto<n farmer who collected parcels from his sharemilkers. When his miniature drive was finished he found himself with a truck load, all donated by the sharemilkers of the one farm. "Wide-awake" Motorists. "Do you have much trouble with speeding motorists on the roads round about, Inspector?" asked Mr Phelan, No. 1 Licensing Authority, during the sitting on Wednesday. "They are wide-awake round here and use their rear vision mirrors.'' answered Traffic Inspector Delves. Mr Phelan observed that proceeding from Opotiki that afternoon his car had been doing about 40-4.) miles per hour but another had/ passed 'as though we were standing.' < - A.A. Meeting. There was a large attendance of Automobile Association (Auckland) members 'and their friends at the King Street Hall last night when a motion picture programme, in natural colour, was presented by Mr R. E. Champtaloup, Touring Manager of the. Association. The speaker was Mr H. W. Bullock, Vice-Pre-sident of the Association, and R. S. Whitley, of the touring staff, and Mr Cyril Walker, local area patrol, were also present. An account of the meeting and picture screening will be published in the next issue. Protest. Approximately 1000 farmers in the South Taranaki district have signed the petition protesting against the action of the Government in making the collection of heavy traffic fees on farmers' trucks compulsory, and asking that Taranaki local bodies, as in the past, be allowed to decide for .themselves whether the payment of the fees on farmers' trucks is to be enforced. The South Taranaki portion of the' petition is to be forwarded to Wellington for presentation to Parliament by Mr H. G. Dickie, member, of Parliament for Patea.
