The First Half. Whakatane Star faced a fairly strong wind and the sun in the first half. Play opened up with a nice solo effort- by Dick Boynton, but ths ball was.-returned- as the restult of a splendid side line run by Jack-" son, who put the Blues on the attack. He ce-ntlrecl when tackled but the bounce of the ball beat the supporting men and play hung in midfield for some time. The Red ajnd Blacks pressed and a willing attack was saved only by a free kicfk for offside right on the Blues* line. Waimana were having the better of the exchanges and penned the Star men to their quarter. Accidental offside play by Cleland halted a Blue reprisal and play remained inside the home team's 25 yard mark, Roper failing with a free kick from a handy position. Play was not opened up at all and it was only by a series of and line outs that WhakataJne Star were able to make their way $o Waimana territory. Dick Boynton relieved with a nice line kick and the same player led a rush, which, however, lacked sting and was halted near the half-way mark. Coming again Whakatane Star opened the scoring per medium of a penalty goal, kicked by Oswald from in front of the posts. Returning to the other end, Q. Boynton missed with an attempt at goaling. Two minutes later R. Boyn ton had a shot, the wind intcrfe,.--ing with the direction and Wlfyikatanc Star forced. The first half saw too many interruptions to play through knocking on. Waimana Evens the Score. The second half opened with a Blue attack, Jackson showing up in one of the bright spots of the match but the home men were unable Io sustain the effort and were thrown back when Waimana came with a passing rush which carried play almost the length of the field. C. Boynton, R. Boynton and Roper handlcef and the movement culminated in a try scored by BarJiow. H. Boynton was unable to convert. Further Red and Black raids were slopped by Jackson jjlaying an outstanding game, this player finding the line repeatedly with excellently judged, kicks and putting his men on the attack. A> fault, and it applied also to Waimana, was the failure of the forwards to back up ; n?'
all and their slow strolling about the field. On a number of occasions sheer laziness on the port of the forwards put heavy responsibilities on the backs. Fortunately, as each : pack was slow to move, the rearw guards of t-lie respective teams foW the most part had to contend only with each other. Playing with the advantage now of both the wind and the sun, Whakatane Star attacked, Oswald miss- . ing narrowly with a pot at goal. Thrown back temporarily, the Blues were not to be denied, CI el and break ing away. He lacked sufficient support however, some of the forwards being down near their own goal line, and the attack was repulsed.. The game developed some spirit towards the end and there were one or two brisk exchanges, but play was mostly confined to the centjre of the field and that was the locale when the final whistle came, with the score still, Wlialcatane 3, Waimana 3.
