Accused pleaded guilty and the ■;same plea was entered on answering a further charge that he failed to possess a current warrant of fit•ness for the vehicle. • Sergeant Farrell informed the Court that at about 5.20 p.m.- on Thursday accused, proceeding along Whakatane-Rotorua highway, was about a mile from the Pfrroporo School when his truck swervacross the road and collided with a car driven, by Mr I. L> Nott&ga;, ;ji Department of Agriculture In•.spector, of Tauranga. Accused had -several passengers, including women .and a baby and one of the passengers was Injured in the collision, jnedical attention being necessary. Jntoxicated an Hour Later, A doctor's certificate showed that accused Avas intoxicated at the time and the Sergeant stated that he was still in that condition an hour afterwards. The Bench, Messrs G. A. Brabrant and C. G. Lucas, J.P.'Sji ■stressed thcs seriousness of the •offence, endangering not only the life of the driver but the lives of others as well, and ofi fenders should be punished severely. Accused was sentenced to" one month's imprisonment and his license was cancelled for a period of two years. On the second count he wvas convicted and discharged.
