RACING NOTES

Glass Contestants. Trainer Fred Davis now has his team nicely settled down at M'atamata, the principal members thereof in active commission oeing Pern. Coronation, Ghcddington and Worton, If they race as well as their high pedigree lines indicate the Matamatn total will rule high next season.

Change of Scene. The stallion Defoe has been transferred to T. George's property at Trenthanv hut: may be sent to thej latter's Masterton farm within the next few weeks. A Magnanimous Offer. For the duration of the war J. King, the Victorian trainer, has offered to the Government his private estate -at Randwiok, consisting of 400 acres, for an air training school. Not for Australia. It has been decided that Old Bill is not to be shipped over to Australia. He will undergo a strong preparation at Awapuni in view of the big spring handicaps in this Dominion. Related to Beaulivre. Included in the big team presided over by F. Smith at Takanini j is a very fine type of dolt by the Bland ford horse, Bulandshar. His dam, Pass On, is by Callaghan, from Pass Word, the latter also oeing the grandson of Beaulivre. The Ring. The Ring, winner of the Hawlce's Bay Cup this year, is again in work at Hastings, and her next contest may be in the New Zealand Cup. She is by Siegfried from Gay Salute, and is considered to be a genuine stayer., The Jockey Premiership. Up to last week, and with three weeks of the present season to go>, the six leading jockeys in the Dominion were W. Broughton 54, B. H. Morris 49, H. N. Wiggins 46, P. Atkins 42, W, Mudford 41 and P. Spratt 40. Takanini Totals. Horses trained at Takanini this season have Avon stake money totalling £30,668. The leading sire represented by Gamos and Gladynev is the Te Aroha owned Musketoon/ with £3576 in prize money, next in order being Foxbridge £3020, Limond £2400, Vaals £1849, Beau Pere £1775 and Cambria Park £1675. A N.Z. Cup Candidate. During the winter months many sportsmen find time in which to study the possibilities of the season's stayers in respect to the New Zealand Gup to be run on the first Saturday in November. Good reports are to hand from Otago relative to the Colonel Cygnus mare Sparkle, owned by Mr W. E>. Hazlett. She has proved to be a stayer of merit, and in thirteen races she won on four occasions and was placed six times, quite a record of consistency. She is to be raced in spring handicaps before entering the New Zealand Cup contest. Not -in the Contest. At the recent Otaki meeting Good Sun went to the post with a view to contesting the Hurdle Handicap, When the barrier went up the horse was tail on to the barrier., so his rider, Arthur Lord, made a quick decision to not chase the field, but to return to the bird cage without doing so, probably as a mild form c.f protest. Backers of Good Sun did not have a run for their money, but probably suffered in silence. What the starter thought on tlu> subject is* not being published, but can be left to the imagination of the sportsmen concerned. On the Easy List. Last winter King Rey took a leading part in the Wellington and Can' terbury meetings. It was intended that he should race at Trentliam tliis week, but unfortunately the veteran developed on attack of strangles, and it. would appear that he will not be carrying the colours of Mr N. Grafas again during the winter months. When he was among I the competitors at the Waikato fixture in May he showed signs of being on the down grade. He is, however, such a consistent and generous performer that he may again show both his galloping and jumping capability before he is retired from the turf. (Continued foot of previous column)
