SEARCH FOR OIL

BORES WELL DOWN PRESSURE OF GAS i i The New Zealand Petroleum Company, Limited, has issued the following bulletin concerning progress at its two drilling sites in the Dominion:—■ "Morere No. I.—Present depth 3312 feet. Well closed in while mixing fresh mud. Old drilling mud became cut and lightened by gas. Glosed-in pressure at well-head 675 lb pers quare inch. "Midhirst No. I.—Drilling commenced at Midhirst, Taranaki, location. Present depth 285 feet. Well now being reamed out to full size." At June G the depth at the Morere No. 1 site was 3312 feet, and apparently no gain has been made in the meantime. The weakening of the mud mixture by gas or water would account for the drilling hold up at this site. The last bulletin foreshadowed an early start with drilling at Midhirst. in the Taranaki area, and apparently good progress has been made. The reaming out of the hole is done in preparation for cementing the surface casing in posi tion, this being a step towards the installation of the valve mechanism which controls pressure in the well.
