SEASONS SUMMARY HIGHEST HERD AVERAGE TO JERSEY BREED The summary for the 1939-40 sea-' son has just been issued by the Day of plenty and East Coast Herd 7(mpfovement Association (Inc.). Altogether 28,736 cows were tested by the association, the best group average being secured "by the Edgecumbe group, with 2751bs bu,t'terfat average. Wh'akatane with an average of 2631bs and Katikati North with 2621b5, occupied second and third places respectively. The Opotiki East group averaged 2551bs a,nd Opotiki West 2421b5. The best figures in the "A" class cows were: Edgecumbe, 2791bs butterfat, Whakatane 2721bs and Katikati North 2681b5. The mature cow averages were: Thornton 2751bs butterfat, Awakeri 2731b5, and Katikati North and South 2721b5. Waiapu group had tbe lowest figure of 2011bs. The highest individual yielcls were: 6281bs butterfat by a 5 year old Friesian in the Katikati South group A 6 year old Jersey in the Wliakatane group averaged 61 libs butterfat, and a 4 year old Jersey in the Te Karaka group produced 6141bs butterfat. Next came an 11 year old Jersey in the Opotiki East group. The highest individual yield in the Opotiki West group was from an 8f year old pedigree Jersey, the figure being 4951bs butterfat. The highest herd average was secured by a Gisborne herd of only four cows, the average being 4961bs butterfat. A Wairoa herd of 21 cows was next with an average of 4081bs butterfat, followed by a Wlia katane herd of 47 cows, with an average of 4051b5. An Opotiki East herd of 35 cows averaged 3361b5, while the highest Opotiki West herd was one of 71 cows, with a 3091bs average. Highest herds were-: 1 to 20 cows, cows 4; average fat 496, average days 317. Highest herd 21-50 cows, 21, 408, 282. Highest herd 51-100 cows, 61, 384, 275. Highest herd 101 cows and over, 112, 358 272.
