CONSERVING PETROL
GOVERNMENT TO SET EXAMPLE —— . :""V' As far as petrol conservation concerned, the attitude of Goveriaf ment Departments as presented ta the public must be "Do as we do," not "Do as we say." This point was made very clear by the Minister of National Service, the Hon. R. Semple, in the course of a statement in which he . said various Departments would be expected to give the people an inspiring lead in saving petrol. "My appeal for the conservation of petrol is not only to the general public and private carriers, but to Government Departments themselves,,'* 1 said Mr Semple, Any official in a Government Department ought to show an example and take the lead. We cannot expect a re-* sponse from the general public unless we get it from our own State Departments. The appeal, in fact, applies to every section of the community with special emphasis on the Government Department and that, of cciurse, includes even the Army, where big lorries should "not be used where little runabouts would suffice." • — ——* . /
