FARM LANDS
BREAKIN G-IN OPERATIONS WORK OF P.W.D. MACHINERY When Mr C. R. Taylor reported to the Eastern Bay of Plenty District Council of Primary Production concerning the breaking-in of land at Manawahe by a Public Works Department bulldozer, he said that there was every hope of getting a second machine into the district. Areas at Nukuhou will come into the scheme later. In detailing the cost involved, Mr Taylor said that: it averaged out at about £2 per acre. One farmer deposited £100 and expected to hav-i 16 or 17 acres stumped and cleared for that amount. The acreage had: been cleared for £27 and the farmer had then scouted for other areas on his property in order to use his deposit. As it was, the Public Works Department would be faced with refunding a certain amount to the property owner. Photographs in Mr Taylor's possession show the bulldozer at work, uprooting stumps that would ordinarily entail hours of hard labour and a considerable amount of hauling.
