MORE MAIZE

i WAR-TIME PRODUCTION EFFORT APPEAL TO BAY FARMERS A letter to Mr C. R. Taylor, from the National Council of Primary Production, indicates that that body intends looking to the Baj r of Plenty for the growing of the entire Dominion maize crop in future. The new scheme is to overcome the necessity of importing maize, and to create in New Zealand a pig industry which will enable us to replace the lost markets of Denmark and Holland. The letter reads: —During rceent years the importation of maize for use as stock feed has been consid- . erable. It has been decided," as a war-time emergency objective, to endeavour to replace the imported maize by supplies grown on the East Coast of the North Island ditional to the current production of that territory. It is particularly desired that you , forthwith take the measures necessary to bring about the requisite increase in your instructorate. X A5' a valuable means towards this result I would suggest that you set up without delay a special, maize committee. The constitution of the committee is a matter to be decided by you possibly in consultation with the District Council of Prim-, ary Production with which you are associated. As a rule such a committee should include representation of the maize growers and of the produce trade in the territory. As a matter of correct procedure the appointment of the special maize committee must be made subject to the approval of the District Council of Primary Production, It may eventually prove advisable to allot district quota of increased production but before taking thestej) it is desired to have frofti each district concerned an 'estimate of the increase in the acreage of maize grown for threshing together with the average yield in bushels per acre that it will be possible to arrange in the coming season. With a view to supplying this information at an early date, please take, without delay, the steps you consider necessary to be able to submit reliable estimates as specified above. Please post to me on or before June 28th a report indicating the position to that date.
