RACING NOTES
A Patriotic Meeting. A meeting to be held at Te Rapa ° on 29th inst by the Waikato Racing. P Club, in aid of the Sick and Wounded Fund, should be a pronounced success. Candidates now in fine racing condition, will be numerous,, consequently the contests should be keenly fought out, while the public will attend in large numbers by virtue of the cause for which the meeting has been promoted. - A Promising Jumper, Tlie Canterbury owned Slayerwon the Dunedin Steeplechase ir* such fine style that he is likely to \ loom large in future big cross country events. He is a horse of very fine constitution and up to weight. a A Class Thoroughbred. A half brother to Gaine Carrington and Wotan, by Bulandshar, ha* just joined H. Dulieu's team at i New Plymouth, He is a well grown i rising two year old, and will be ex:l pected to make a name for himself on the turf. s 'i Better Later On. Many references are being mads ■ to the fact that the New Plymouth, " pair Majority and Minority, were • wholly unsuccessful in their ftorth- • ern tour, and are not now so popu- '» lar with backers. The probability • of this pair re-instating '• during the winter is apparently being overlooked, for it is quite on the cards that they will have considerably benefited by their gallops at • Te Rapa and Ellerslie. Another Steeplechaser. It is generally considered that thiswinter there is a shortage of cross country horses of high calibre. This being so it is worthy of note that the Gisborne owned Small Boy, hasr entered the lists, and last week lie prevailed in the Hawke's Bay Steeplej chase. It is reported that his jump- „ ing st yle has very much improved- , so may be Clarion Call, All Irish. . and Streamline will have to look totheir laurels in respect to the Wellington and Grand National Steeple , chases. , Racing -Club's Profit. > The Amberley Racing Club madea profit of approximately £1000 out of its annual meeting held at Riocarton, and has since donated £100to the local Red Cross Fund. The Melbourne Cup. The following New Zealand horseshave been nominated for the Melbourne Cup to be run in November next: Catalogue, Beau Vite, Beaupartir, Norse, Peerless, Lambounv Old Bill Potai and Glaciata. Standing Starts. To be considered ndxt month bythe Racing Conference are two re-f mits in-respect to the rule that flatfooted starting must be observed. The Manawatu Racing Club advocates dispensing with th estanding starts,, whi 1 e theWaikato Racing Club favours the-flat-footed despatch for fields up to ten, and moving starts over that . number. The probabilities are that the conference will at least decide on a trial of moving starts,, as. toeing the mark has practically proved a failure so much so that starters \ are willing to stand the chance of being reported to the conference by stipendiary stewards for breaking the rule for time and again in order to save long delays, at the post,, and give contestants an even chance they send their fields away on the move. As showing which way wind blows many North Islam]* Clubs have signified their desin? for a resumption to the starting made as a change from the antiquated rule.
