ACCIDENT AT OPOTIKI

Further details are to hand concerning the accident at Opotiki on Sunday, which was reported in Mon day's issue. Mr Donaldson, the driver of the truck,, had been to Hawai and was passing through Opotiki at the time with a big load of firewood. He was accompanied by his two sons, Charles Joseph, aged 7, and Thomas Arthur, aged 9, who were in the cab witli him. At the time of the accidcnt the truck was travelling along Nelson Street in a northerly direction and Mr Donaldson endeavoured to avoid a collision with a car proceeding along Bridge Street by turning to the right but the vehicles met. The truck capsized, the two boj r s being thrown from the side window of the cab. The younger boy was crushed by the body of the truck, death being instantaneous. The elder boy was caught by one foot and deeply buried by the firewood. He was removed to hospital suffering from severe scalp injury, concussion and bruises. Both vehicles were extensively damaged but neither of the drivers was injured.
