ITALIAN BASES ATTACKED MERCHANT SHIPS CAPTURED Not waiting for thfe Italian Command to attack, the Allies in the Near East have taken I the initiative. A Royal Air Force communique issued in Cairo a few hours ago states that bomb ers attacked Italian bases in East Libya and Italian East Africa, destroying aircraft on the ground and petrol dumps. The places attacked were the principal Italian air bases threatening the Red Sea route and the Sudan. The bombers met some opposition from Italian fighters but the latter were driven off. Three R.A.F. 'planes are missing. The Royal Navy, too, has been active and has sown extensive mine fields around the Italian coast and on the Albanian coast. ft is estimated that 27 Italian merchant ships have been lost, by capture, internment or scuttling.
