SCOTS WHA' HAE!
JLOCAL CALEDONIANS FORGATHER T)nce again the Winter Show Hail was well filled, when the Whakatane Caledonian Society held its May Ingleside on Friday evening and adherents of the Land of hill and heather forgathered for the purpose of enjoying themselves in a Snanner dear to their hearts and in keeping with the best Scottish traditions. The whole programme went with the same good swing which has characterised the Society's events in the past and it was noteworthy that 50 per cent of those present were from the country districts, indicating that the Inglesides have a strong following and are popular with those who have to put up with the inconvenience of petrol restrictions. Proceedings were opened with the piping in of Chief Simons to the -dais, and no time was lost introducing the dance programme. Music was provided by Mrs Armstrong's full •orchestra, and the old-time numbers were warmly applauded. Bt is the endeavour of the Society to maintain all the old-time dances and by teaching the younger members to ensure that the older ones will also be able to enjoy themselves. Thus on Friday evening it was pleasing to note the entire assembly executing the Highland Schotische, the Gay Gordons and the D'Alberts. A highlight of the evening was the drum-major's display by the Pipe Band. This clever piece of work, was a direct tribute to the training by Pipe-Major L. Johnston, and was warmly appreciated by the crowd. "It is understood that the band will be giving the same display at Rotov rua on the King's Birthday when a junior band contest will be staged. Enjoyable items given during the evening were provided by Mrs M. Kingsley-Smith (elocution) "Bairnies •Cuddle Doon" and Miss Isobel Martin, who danced the Seann Trubhais. Supper was served by the usual -capable ladies' committee and was all that could be desired.
