NEW POST OFFICE
QUESTION OF A SITE DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL "I understand that the Government intends to erect a new Post Office on the present cramped site," .said Cr Good at the Borough Council's monthly meeting. He suggested that it the Council was interested representations could be 'mad e to have it built in a less congested area and thought that Commerce Street would be an admirable place. The Mayor said he was not in favour of shifting the Post Office to the western end of the town. The Post Office acted as an anchor, he said, and if it Ave re removed the toAvn would tend to drift towards it. The town already had a tendency towards the suggested area. Cr Canning said there Avas no possible chance of the Minister in charge altering his mind. On a visit to Whakatanc he had been emphatic I that the Post Office would not be ; removed from its present site. It AA r as stated by another councillor that the Minister had indicated three years ago that mention of a change of site would endanger the grant for the ncAV building. A picture of what would happen to the western end of the toAvn should the Post Office be shifted, Avas presented by Cr Sullivan, Avho said that it would mean empty shops —and nothing looked worse in a town than that. He suggested, instead, that if another site Avas required the Civic Buildings corner would suit admirably. It Avas in the ccntre of the toAA r n. Discussion lapsed.
