MISCHIEF CHARGE
PROBATION FOR MAORI FOR DAMAGE DONE A Maori, Ray Samuel, of Te Teko, was charged before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., yesterday with causing mischief by wilfully destroying 11 rgaljlons of paint and oil valued at £22 5s 6d, the property of Leonard Arthur Needham. The offence referred to May 4th. The accused, who elected to be 4 dealt with summarily, pleaded guilty. Constable F. M- Fuller said Samuel was addicted to drink and when he was under the influence of liquor lie did some silly things. He had :a >liabit, when he, was drunk, of going round the backs c? the hotel. At the "back of the hotel on May 4th werte quantities of paint and oil and defendant apparently tipped over the •-cans deliberately. The Magistrate: If I put him in gaol it won't pay for the damage. What is his character? Constable Fuller: Fair. I can say that. Accused was admitted to probation for twelve months, a condition being that he abstains from drinking intoxicating liquor to excess. He was ordered to pay £30 Is fid, which was the sum 'rf the total damage caused., *J|
