Dear Sir,
Letters to the Editor must be clearly written on one side of the paper only. Where a nom-de-plume is used the name of the writer must be enclosed for reference purposes only. A BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY Sir, —This town has a natural beauty which could be improved greatly with a little effort and the promotion of a Beautifying Society should meet the need. The water* front could be made more attractive, especially from the old wharf to the Heads. At present it is nothing but a stretch of rock and dusfc ind the playground is hardly a ere-' Jit to Whakatane. Ido not know whether these are matters for the 3orough Council, or not but surely :he ratepayers would not object to i slight increase in the rates if it <vas for the purpose of improving :he appearance of the town. There s a difficulty, of course, in the foriiation of a Beautifying Society sit :he present time, as it would"'pigtibibly be found almost impossible to aise sufficient funds when there are ;o many appeals already being made 'or patriotic purposes. But if a small start could be made in the way >übscriptions perhaps the Borough! Houncil and the. Chamber of Comnerce would assist with donations md then something could be done* it is an idea worthy of the attend :ion of Whakatane residents and IJ lope that some move will be made. Yours etc., "WILLING.'!
