WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT EDGECUMBE (Beacon Correspondent) The monthly meeting of the Edgecumbe Women's Institute took place on Tuesday, April 23rd in the Edgecumbe Hall. Mrs Learning presided. I The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship and members stood in silence for one minute in tribute t% the late Prime Minister, Mr M. Ji. Savage. After the business was concluded Mrs Crang gave a very interesting report of the Council meet'-* ing at Opotiki. Mrs G. Irving then gave a very enjoyable talk on the Centennial Exhibition. This was much appreciated and the speaker was ac!corded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Poole gave a reading from Longfellow's poem "The Psalm of Life." A competition "Contents of Your Handbag" was won by Poole for the largest number and; Mrs Burgess the smallest. The roll call was "My Favourite Radio Artist." Afternoon tea was then the hostesses for the day being Mrs W. B. Gow and Mrs Snelling.

MATATA BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Matata W.I. was held on Friday, April 26th in the Pre-byterian Hall. There was a fair attendance. Mrs Cavex;hill presided and welcomed all members and visitors. The meeting opened with the read ing of the Aspiration. Mrs Caverhill then gave a report on the* cent Council meeting held at Gpo-i tiki. Arrangements were made to collect further parcels for soldiers in June. Competitions resulted as follows:— Best Flower: Mrs H. D. Wilson 1 4 Miss Burt 2, Mrs R. Withy 3. Bowl of Foliage and Berries: Mrs Ansell 1, Mrs Smith 2, Mrs R. Withy 3. Bottled Peaches: Mrs Smith and Miss Burt tied for 1, Mrs Ansiell 2. Soft Toy: Mrs Smith 1, Mrs A'n-i sell 2. Afternoon tea was served by members other than the committee, and a pleasant afternoon was brought to a close.
