RACING NOTES
A RACING TROPHY After t lie success of Jack Tar at Whangarei on Friday, his owners, the Hon. E. R. Davis and Mr Oliver Nicholson, announced they would donate a cup, valued at 2.") guineas, for the next meeting of the Racing Club. FRANKLIN JOCKEY CLUB The Franklin Jockey Club, Pukekohe, which held a race meeting on March 2nd last, will stage another on May 4th. Good racing should be assured as quite a large percentage of horses are being kept in commiseion in view of the Waikato meeting on May 18 and 20, and the Auckland Club's Great Northern fixture. A TE AROHA WINNER The King Lu gelding, Pirate King, who was victorious at the Bay of Plenty and Avondale meetings, and whose wins will be remembered by reason of their remunerative figures, is being kept steadily in work in view of the Great Northern meeting in June at Ellerslie. Whether he Avill actually compete there will be known only on the day of the race, for it lias been proved that he does not act well on a slippery course. THE OPOTIKI TEAM Although at present without the services of Llangolleln and Scotland the stable presided over by the very successful trainer, M. B. Abbott, has a very nice team in Merry Vaals, Sir Robin and Raepata. The first mentioned two won at Whangarei, while Raepata filled third place in the principal event. This Brazen re-, presentative is piling up a list of seconds and thirds, but there are yet Ito be held meetings at which he may register wins. CORONATION RE-COMMISSIONED Silver Stick's box in the Fred Davis stable at Ellerslie has been taken by the Limond —Jewel of Asia representative Coronation, Avho has been enjoying a paddock holiday for the past twelve months. As a three year old he won the Champion Hack Handicap at Pahiatua. and the Champion Hack at Te Aroha. He then decided to take matters easy for a time, and when he is ready to again do his bit he will be worthy of the attention of backers.
THE WELLINGTON GUINEAS The Wellington Racing Club has decided to include in its programme for the next Spring meeting a race to be called the Wellington Guineas This will take the place of the Trentham Stakes. The change is in the right direction, and will make for further popularity.-. A CLEVER STEEPLECHASER; Trainer Doc Knapp, the Palmerston North mentor, who makes periodical trips to northern meetings, and generally with very capable leapers, has now taken in hand for winter racing the steeplechaser Taillight. This jumper may carry the colours at Te Rapa next month and treat the onlookers to another splendid exhibition of cross country jumping. UNFORTUNATE OCCURRANCES The Fordell stable presided over by Dave Marks has had a decidedly bad run this month for within a few days Ruatiti, Scandal and Red Cat had to be placed on the easy list consequent upon minor troubles, while Russian Ballet broke down badly, and may not again see the racing track. . DONEGAL AN IMPROVER The latest addition to Frank Tut- ' chcn's Te Rapa team is Donegal, who is expected to race prominently | now that the turf is fast losing its firmness and sting. ■tan ' A PROMISING TWO YEAR OLD The well known Hamilton owner. Mr R. T. Reid, produced at Avon- ; lale the two year old Laughing Fox. | by Foxbridge—Comedienne. As he ; has in no way been hurried as a juvenile, he should be a good three year old, and with such a fine galloping companion as Marshall Hall, may be right in the highlights next season.
