PAPER SHORTAGE
EFFECTS SEEN SHOPPING BY BASKET The shortage of brown paper, -due to import restrictions and other causes, is making itself felt in Whakatane. Though several firms took the precaution to buy in stocks before the position became serious and several others had large stocks on hand, there are some who are Hearing the end of their supplies and the prospects of obtaining more are not bright. At least one shop in Whakatane is absolutely without and is at present using newspaper to wrap •customers' purchases. It is stated by this firm that even newspaper is hard to procure. Faced with the prospect of being ■unable to obtain brown wrapping paper some shops may yet Jiave to ■ that customers bring baskets to carry away the goods. In the meanwhile, save your old newsare going to be useful. Other Effects. A further effect of the shortage -■of paper generally is that the Whakatane Borough and County Councils have now to print their minutes, officers' reports, details of correspondence, etc.. on both sides of the sheets used in presenting a record of the business before the individual councillors. At Dunedin the St. Kikla Bor'OUgh Council has taken a step further and the Clerk now reads the minutes and other details to !he 'Council. This, however, was not on the score of shortage, but price. It was stated that paper which previously cost 4s (id per ream now cost nearly double that amount,, and that in all probability the price would ..be trebled in the near future.
