DRIFTING AGAIN
Representations to the Education Department in Wellington to recognise the claims of the Whakatane School for increased accomodation, and the urgency of correcting a state of affairs, which dictates that overflow classes must be taught in alleyways, detached sheds and makeshift buildings, appeared a month ago to have been successful. Unfortunately today the whole vii'tal question seems to be drifting again and unless a very vigorous and decided move is made, the whole issue is l'ikely to be clouded by shoals of diplomatic departmental communications which in reality spell—procrastination! This state of affairs is intolerable and after months of reasonable negotiation, parents cannot be expected to put up wii'th them much longer. The whole proposal from the committee which was approved in the first in stance is now being whittled down. With winter approaching, the Department fails to see the urgenqy of getting something done. Tenders have not been called and as far as can be ascertained proper plans are not yet drawn, up. As citizens and as taxpayers we have a right to expect beter treatment for our children, and, unless something is done to release this matter from the red tape which as now preventing its prosecution more drastic measures can be expected from the parents in the very near future.
