SWIMMING POOL

THE OHOPE PROJECT TO BE INVESTIGATED The vexed question of the proposed swimming pool at Ohope, was introduced again at the first meeting of the newly-form ed Ohope Progress and Ratepayers League, which took place last Tuesday evening in the Captain's Cabin Hall. The matter was fully discussed and the meeting decided to go into the subject of water supply, cost, maintenance, etc., before entertaining the question of once again bringing it to the notice of the County Council. A special sub-commit tee was set up to investigate. The chairman, Mr A. J. Canning, stated tlmt the matter had been given the fullest prominence in the press, and most people were now fully conversant with it. He congratulated Mr Mahy on bis initiative, and added that he knew of one subscriber to the scheme who vowed, that if it succeeded, lie would be prepared to erect a statue of Mr ■Mahy in a bajhing costume as a tribute to his enthusiasm. Mr Mahy stated that be bad £17d ill band, representing subscriptions from 700 persons. The small area he had in mind for the erection of the bath w r as only in rough scrub and likely to remain so. It was a central position and being on a public reserve could not possibly be accused of serving private interests The meeting considered that before the League could give any indication of its interest or otherwise it would be necessary to know more about the project. A sub-committee comprising Messrs W. Sullivan and C. Kingsley-Smith was set up to confer with Mr Mahy on the scheme and to obtain from him the data and all other information he hid collected. This sub-committee will report back to a later r meeting cf the full executive, which will then decide the attitude of the League in the matter.
