EDGECUMBE FAREWELL

POPULAR DANCE HELD PRESENTATION TO MEN Bell's Hall, Edgecumbe, Avas filled to capacity with dancers from all parts of the district on Tuesday night, the occasion being a fareAvell dance .tendered to the men of the Second Echelon Avho Avere on final lea\ ? e. Those assisting Avere: Mr and Mrs F. VilTis, Mrs W. B. Gow, Mrs J.Jamieson, Mr and Mrs W. A. Hutton. Mrs Goldsmith Snv., Mrs Sunkel Mrs Blair and Miss G. Ranby. Mr F. Villis very ably carried out the duties of M.C. An apology Avas received from Mr F. W. DoJdge, M.P., Avlioiwas to have made the presentations. This duty was ably performed by Mr I. B. Gow. Mr Gow said that in extending good wishes to the soldiers on behalf of all present., he felt proud that already this district had made such a good show in the matter of volunteers. Recognising their responsibility as members of the community, these fine young men had offered their services as all should be Avilling to fight for the heritage of freedom which we enjoy under the British flag. For those who stay at home,, Mr Gow said, the duly Avas clear —to help keep the land fit for them to return to. Mistakes had been made in the past but it Avas up to those Avho were unable to fight in this Avar,, to do their utmost to see that those mistakes were not repeated. He Avished them God speed and a safe return.

Gifts of leather money belts were Hi en made to the following men:— Captain C. A. Le Lievre, Armourer Sergeant E. Rogers, Quartermaster Sergeant Sainty; Lance, Corporal H. C.resswell and Privates K. ViVlis, S. Hunt, Drummond, G. IT or wood, R, Pearce, Ray Knock, R. Colebrook. Those men avlio were not present will have their gifts sent to them. Each belt contained £1 10s, this money "having been raised by a series of dances by Mr and Mrs F. ViVlis, Mr and Mrs Fowell, Mr and Mrs Mu 11 ins and Mrs Boothby. Mr J. Rutherford on behalf of the Edgecumbe School Committee, made a presentation to Captain C. A. Le Lievre of a fountain pen. Captain Lc Lievre. lie said, had been a valuable member of the school committee and its secretary for nine years and they welcomed the opportunity to express their appreciation of his Avork and to Avish him God speed and good luck. Captain Le Lievre thanked those responsible for organising the function for their gifts and good Avishes. and he and the other soldiers were accorded musical honours.
