Troops on leave were a feature oi the streets of Whakatane during the Easter week-end. A popular Yankee Tournament took place on the Ohope courts last Saturday when a large number of visitors and residents combined to take part in an interesting competition. The winners were ladies. According to an officer of the Social Security Department, svhc called recently upon the County Clerk, the free basis upon which No. 13 Scheme labour Avas supplied to local bodies would be withdrawn The Engineer, Mr Brebner, stated that only three Scheme 13 workers were at present employed. Kopuriki Stream Bridge. Following an inspection by f special committee from the County Council of the Kopuriki Streair Bridge, the Engineer, Mr C, H Brebner, lias been instructed 'tt make a survey of the sight and prepare plans and specifications for f two-way concrete bridge, whicl will be completed by contract following approval from the P.W.D. Not a Combined Appeal. The welfare appeal for the fighting services, which was announced in last Wednesday's issue is not ir any way connected with the Flunkct appeal on Friday next. In view of the close provimity of the two dates the Plunket. Society which is in urgent need of funds requests that donors will not overlook the second appeal in the same week but will give as liberally as in the past. Youthful Bandsman's Success. Competing against many with years of experienpe, Leonard .Broadmore, schoolboy son of Mr and Mrs E. Broadmorc, of Thornton Road, on Sunday won tjhe B Flat Cornet Solo at the South Auckland Brass Bands Centennial Contest held over the week-end at Te Aroha. Master Broadmore is destined for high honours. Benzine Restrictions. Apparently motorists took advantage of the opportunity to use April petrol coupons over the Easter holidays. A BEACON representative noted that the volume of traffic on the Rotorua-Auckland highway was as large as in previous years, a continuous line travelling North on Monday afternoon. More traffic than has been seen for some time was also noted on the Whakatanc-Rotorua road and it would seem that many motorists will have to ration the ration till the end of next month.
