OHOPE SWIMMING POOL
Surely, when the Whakatane County Council is offered the erection of a children's swimmming pool- costfree, plus maintenance for two years, it is scarcely the time to give the whole proposition the cold shoulder. Those who have read of the proceedings at the last council meeting must find it hard to placate the attitude of a local body, which though ostensibly pledged to progress, has no qualms in tossing away a liberal offer running into a couple of hundred pounds. Even though there may have been slight infringements on constitutional methods when going about the inauguration of the scheme,, that phase is surely past now, and to simply ignore a public—spirited offer because of a vague possibility of some slight responsibility un the future'is rather hard to understand. It is doubtful whether another local body in the Dominion, faced with .the same circumstances would have acted in the same offhand man-ner,-without making at least some counter suggestion or offer. It is to be sincerely hoped that this is not the council's last word on the matter.
