A NOVEL EVENING

SCOT-MAORI GATHERING HAGGIS AND HAKAS In an effort to prove that the Scottish Clan system was closelyj allied to the Maori tribal sections, a group of local residents arranged a novel evening at which an honest endeavour was made to blend the two. Strange as it may seem, the evening was a complete success, the liangi-cooked meal being borne inside to the sound of the bagpipes, and a makeshift haggis being addressed in the famous words of the 'immortal bard.' The proceedings of the social gathering which followed was a remarkable mixture of hakas, bagpipes, waiatas, elocution, songs and Highland dancing. The experiment was unanimously voted an outstand ing success and the toast of Maui and St. Andrew was enthusiastically honoured.
