GAS FUEL INSTEAD OF PETROL
The exploitation of petrol substitutes is being developed in Britain as the result of petrol rationing. Methane, which is derived from sewage, coalmines and coke ovens, is equivalent to petrol at lOd, writes the motoring correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. It is more effective than coal-gas or petrol. Hitherto it has been used only in a few stationary engines. It is now being applied to motor cars, the conversion of which to methane costs only £25. Large quantities of methane are at present wasted. Scotland has natural methane sources equivalent to at least 45,000,000 gallons of petrol. Use of Coal Gas. Gas companies are developing coal-gas fuel, which 200 London garages will shortly be supplying. The cost of converting a vehicle is from £o0 to £.)0, and 200 cubic feet of gas. costing 1s Bd, is equivalent lo a gallon of petrol. There is a growing demand for producer gas. One firm is turning out .10 plants weekly. This fuel is j two-thirds cheaper than petrol.
