CARELESS LONDON
LOSING ITS GAS MASKS Gas masks figured so prominently in the pre-war preparations that it might be thought that the Londoner would be impressed with their importance, but at present London is losing its gas masks at the rate of 7.'5,000 a year. The masks are left in trams, buses and trains at an average of 200 a day. That may not seem high for the 4,000,000 people in London who daily travel around, but the losses are noticed to be at an increasing rate. At the end of January the Lost Property Office had 4000 unclaimed gas masks. Only 40 per cent are usually claimed, and of these claimed masks only one-half bear the names and addresses of their owners Torches, for use in London on which the blackout descends, each night, are aiso being left in conveyances a'J the ratie of from 12 to 20 a day. Handbags are being left behind in increasing numbers since the Avar began.
