INTER-CLUB SPORTS

CLOSE FINISHES A FEATURE WHAKATANE STILL LEADS Although conditions were far from bright, rain held off on Saturday to allow the postponed interclub sports meeting between Te Puke, Whakatane and Tauranga athletic clubs to be held in Jubilee Park. The dull, overcast sky, however kept many spectators away, but a lower temperature than has been experienced for several days made running conditions rather more pleasant. Those who attended were treated to an excellent display of sportsmanship and competitive sport with some particularly close finishing in the majority of the events. Te Puke gained the honours of the day by a narrow margin. It would be difficult to single out particular athletes or events, although two worthy of mention were the senior three-mile and the senior 410 yards. Iu the former, Lodge and Preston of the Tauranga Club, made an excellent pair taking laps. Although first place honours were gained by the Tauranga Club, Rendall representing Whakatane, made a valiant solo effort to combat the team challenge, and in a sprint finish, challenged Lodge to gain second place for his club. Te Puke successes gained them first place for the day, with 4( points, followed closely bj r Tauranga with 36 points, and Whakatane with 32 points.
