WIN FOR TANEATXJA LEES CUP MATCH liy defeating the Te Puke Tennis Club team by 10 games to seven, with two matches unfinished, the Taneatua Club retained the Lees Cup from the challenge by Te Puke at Taneatua during the week-end. After Saturday's torrential downpour, chances of outdoor recration were very remote, but a sudden change during the night brought a hot sunny day on Sunday. Although the surface of the grass courts at Taneatua had dried out, the going was still heavy, and being accustomed to hard courts, the Te Puke team found the non-rising ball and spin rather disconcerting until they had settled down. In spite of this, however, play was exceptionally keen, resulting in some particularly close games.
All four ladies' singles went to the- home club, but the men equalled the games count by winning five out of their six singles. Two particularly good games were played between the top and second players in both clubs. With one set each, live games each and points at deuce in the third set. play, between Cameron, ol' Te Puke, and R. R. Lees, of Taneatua, was particularly keen, neither player taking any chances, and with excellent rallies being a feature of the game. The deciding points, however, were gained by Cameron for the Te Puke Club. On the next court the same position had arisen between W. Butcher and M. F. Lees, but the points in this game went to the home club player. Ladies' doubles went to the hame club, making the games seven to Taneatua, and five to Te Puke. There were still chances for the visitors when two out of the three men's doubles were won by Te Puke making the scoring eighl games to seven, but after two of the combines had gone to the home dub. the result of the match was placed beyond doubt.
