THE CENTENNIAL SPIRIT

WHAKATANE'S COMING PAGEANT ■' i WANTED—VICTORIAN COSTUMES AND VEHICLES The Centennial committee is actively interesting itself in the preparations for the special procession and pageant display on March 16. A special appeal is mads to air residents in town and district to be-, come centennial-minded. The success of the whole programme depends more 01 less entirely upon the co-operation of the general public and the attendance at the various points of interest upon the day. A special effort is now being made to discover as many of the old Victorian frocks, as used by our grand mothers, as possible. It is hoped to have these figuring prominently in the historic scenes Wi?fch will be re-enacted. To this end, and by way of creating a further interesting section in the procession from the Domain, owners o|f old horse-drawn vehicles are also asked to co-operate by putting the ancient carriages 'into commission and if possible finding occupants who will be suitably dressed for the occasion. The committee is keen to avoid any attempt to burlesque the procession,, but would .welcome enquiries from those who would be willing tcf actively assist towards the success of the day in the above connection. Further enquiries may be made with the secretary of the subcommittee C. Kingsley-Smith c/o Beacon Office. gj^ Old identities—those of approxi- 1 mately 35 years residence in town and district, or longer are asked t» communicate with the town clerk, Mr D. V. Saunders. , -
