Improvement in Toroa Street. It is surprising the difference that can be made by the removal of ■weeds and grass. The footpath in Toroa Street, for so long a mere track through a jungle of growth, is now bearing an improved appearance. having undergone a beautifying treatment of weed removal. Return of Summer. After a week or two of cold and rainy weather, very unseasonable, the return of bright, sunny days is pleasant. Gardens and lawns in Whakatanc this time last year burned and dry, have benefited from the perverse season and are in good j shape to withstand some weeks of continued Summer.

At a Farmers' Union meeting held in the district recently the subject of the commandeer by the Government of hides and skins was brought up for discussion. Various members spoke and eventually a remit was passed to the effect, 'That this Branch protests against the commandeer of the farmers' hides." One speaker said that under the present prices the system would leave the farmers bare. It was not suggested that they were thin-skinned, but outside comment later gave the idea, that, with a chance, they, could save their own hides.
