(By Zetland) HIGHLY BRED Lady Clorane bv Lord Warden — Clorane., owned and trained by Mr C, Fletcher, ol' Waitoa, ran a solid race when she accounted for the Hinucra Handicap at Matamata. She lias not been hurried in her preparation and is subject to even further improvement in her racing con dition. On pedigree lines she ranks djs high grade. Her sire is by Phalaris —Scarlet Martayon, while her dam is by Rosewing (Sunstar) from Belcaire (Treclare) . THE STOREY MEMORIAL The handicaps for the first day's events at the Waikato meeting made their appearance up to time, and already have been widely discussed by racing enthusiasts. Full notice has been taken of Golden Sheila'is spring form, for in the Storey Memorial, of eleven furlongs she has been allotted the Aveltcr weight or 9.0. Owing to having sustained a severe rick while competing in the Tc Awamutu Cup on December 10 last, the Gay Shield mare has since been off the scene. In her case, therefore it is a question whether she Avill be sufficiently forward on the 17th inst to reach her top form. WILL DO BETTER The Paeroa trained Gold Vaals ran quite a good race in the Walton Handicap at Matamata, when he finished third to Pocket Venus and Erlick. But for experiencing a check at a critical point of the race he would have finished closer up. The Vaals representative will be improved by the gallop, and should be very prominent in his next contests. RETURNING TO HURDLING It has been decided to, in the near future, retire King Rey from flat racing, and to resume his preparation for hurdle events. Apparently he will have to carry very solid weights in this department for in the Frankton Hurdles to be run at the Waikato meeting Ihis week he has been allotted 12.7. If he wins he will quickly be up on the 13st.. division with that good hurdler and weight carrier, Erination.
LOU ROSA'S TASK To win the Juvenile Handicap at Te Rapa this week Lou Rosa, handicapped at 10.2, will need to be a champion of champions in the juvenile field. In the entry list there are 32 two year olds, of which 28 have been allotted from 7.0 to 7.13 and. to those on the minimum Lou 'Rosa has to concede no less than 441b>. Unmistakably the Wellington handicapper has a very high opinion of the Foxbritlgc—Lucy Rose colt. BAY OF PLENTY CLUB STAKES FOR MARCH RACES Stakes to the value of £3100 will be distributed at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, to be held at Tauranga on March 9 and 11.
