THE RED CROSS

activities of opotiki branch GOOD STALL RESULTS The entertainment committee of t;he local branch of the Red Cross Society recently conducted a very successful Bring and Buy stall. Arrangementß were in the hands oi Mrs Quirk (convener), Mrs W. M, Smith (secretary) y and Mrs Roberts (treasurer). Others in charge of stalls were Mrs Mail, Mrs A. t-. Maitin, Mrs Dicker, Miss Jean Armstrong and Miss Bridge. Competitions were won by Miss J, Maxwell, Mrs J. Baird r and Mrs L. Quirk.

There is an impression current among some people that money collected by Red Cross branches arc subject to control as in the case with Patriotic Funds. This is not so. All money collected locally for the Red Cross is retained by the branch and is expended locally in furnishing materials for the making of comforts and carrying out other purely Red Cross :work. The only outside expenditure is a small annual contribution towards the running of the Dominion headquarters of the Society in.Wellington (wliere expenses are kept down to a minimum).

Alreadj r f<he local branch has in hand a good .slock of articles of clothing ready for dispatch overseas It> members of the New Zealand forces. Arrangements have already been made for sending individual parcels to eacli member of the First Echelon who has enlisted from the Opotiki district. Nursing classes have been held for some mojnths now, and at recent examinations 14 candidates passed the test for Home Nursing and ten for First Aid. The classes are indebted to Dr H.< J. Mail and Nurse Hubbard, who acted as honorary instruc tors, mul to Dr C. James and Sister Adams, the examiner.
