MAKETU NOTES
PATRIOTIC DANCE a -rata .rj On the evening of the 27th, the newly formed Patriotic Committer liekl a very successful farewell dance for some of the first members of the Maori Battalion to go into camp. During the evening Mr W. E. Single tjon sypoke briefly to the boys about to leave and wished, them God speed, and said he was happy to sec such .a large gathering of Pakehas and Maoris assembled. He hoped the 3'oung people would do their bit for tiie boys going to war by coming along to all the socials and dances which the local Patriotic Committee intended holding in the future. The Committee responsible for the success of the evening, which showed a very gratifying nett balance, namely ,£22 15s, comprised Messrs W. E. Singleton (secretary and trea surer), W. A. Cartel-, K. Tapsell and T'. Hay ward, while the ladies' committee responsible for an exceptional delicious supper were under the capable supervision of Mrs Singleton. Those assisting were Mesdames J. Shalfoon, K. Tapsell, T. Hayward, Webb and Newdick. Mrs Webb won the competition for the box of chocolates. Kingi Boys* Orchestra provided popular dance music.
