Green Pastures of the Rangitaiki. ''Throughout the tour 1 did not see a district comparable with the Rangitaiki,'* said Mr T. J. Cummings, who returned last week from a tour of the Nortel Island. i\lr Cummings said that the land round Taihape and in the 'iaranaki district was brown and as bare as a rock and it was a pleasant change to come once more to the green pastures of the Rangitaiki Valley. Swarm of Bees on Stake. An unusual perch for a swarm of bees was the top of a garden stake j|n the garden of a very perturbed householder in Souters Avenue. The first scouts had apparently sent back delightful descriptions of the stake ' in question, which were unanimously endorsed by the main body which arrived in a steady stream until the unpretentious upright assumed the appearance of a giant brown club. The attention of readers is drawn to the meeting to be held in the Presbyterian Hall this evening, for the purpose of discussing the possibility of entering a choir from this district "in the forthcoming Auckland Centennial Choir competition. All interested are urged to attend. ' !' Penguins at Home, Much amusement has been caused during the last week or so over the antics of some young penguins which Avere washed up on Maketu Point during the recent gales. One in particular, has bccomc quite tame and appears tt> have settled down at Waihi Beach. Centennial Parade Excellent progress is being made with the stonewalling of the Centennial Road despite the damage done in the recent severe north-Avest erly gales, and it is expected that the iob will be completed by the end of March. Tn fact, the damage was a blessing in disguise, as it showed up all the most vulnerable points on the beach road, and, as a i*esult, these have been doubtly reinforced.
Advertising the' District. The representations of the Whakatanc County Council that this district should be better advertised at the Centennial Exhibition have apparently met with some success. The authorities have ;>receded to the request that suitable pictures be displayed and a very beautiful coloured enlargement of Ohope Beach has been despatched with the caption reading 'Ohope Beach. Whakatane. Bay of Plenty.'' Sport Abandoned. Once again sport in Whakatane was abandoned on account of rain. It is many years since the district has experienced such a consistent period of bad Aveather. Both cricket matches on the Domain were startad but were forced to stop before more three.or four batsmen had been dismissed. At Ohope the same position arose, the match between the Methodist and Ohope Tennis Clubs also beifcig abandoned after one or t'wo matches had been played. Nudist Onion Lifter. The versatility of Ohope is once again demonstrated by the action of one of its cosmopolitan residents who has apparently cultivated a flair for earh' morning onion lifting. However noti to be outdone for originally or modesty he has selected the adamic garb to grace his depredations. Upon a recent morning a well-known- householder reports seeing the artist disappearing with only a towel about his loins, well loaded with onions from his back garden. Its Hard to Understand! At least two persons have left Ohope Beach with hard and bitter feelings for the popular resort. They are a pair from the North who claim that they have been duped, taken in, let down and doubledcrossed. Here are their very words: "We had heard so many won derful reports of 'Beautiful Ohope' that we decided to spend a short holiday. Well you know what has happened during the last week. Nothing, but rain, wind, bitter cold, and discomfort. Where's your Ohope Beautiful place—humph, its the last time we'll come." It was useless for the writer to "point out that the unseasonable weather was Dominion- ]
wide. Ohopc was to blame, and there Avas no dodging it. NO NEED TO ENVY THE GIRL with the alluring figure. Take Yim
