WHAKATANE BRANCH MEETS
MUSICAL AETERNOON
The monthly meeting of the Women's Institute was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday the 6th instant, with the president, Mrs Armstrong, in the chair, and an attendance of about 50 members.
It was decided to send a delegate to the next general conference in Wellington.
Several offers of help were received from members in connection wi.th the stall at the Summer Show in aid of the Blind Institute. In this connection members unable to bring contributions to the show were asked to leave them at depots, namely the homes of Mesdames Brunton, Berry and Norman. Cakes, produce or any thing else saleable are solicited. The business of receiving nominatoins for committee and president was proceeded with; several members not seeking re-election. Nine nominations were received for the committee and. that of Mrs SutclifFe for president. The entertainment took the form of a musical afternoon, "The Life of Schubert" being read by Mrs Albiston and Schubert's song "Who is Sylvia" being rendered by Mrs S. Miller.
Both competitions caused considerable amusement, the Wall Competition "Musical Expressions" being won by Mrs Moran, and the names of songs by Mrs Millar. Competition for the best jar of plums was won by Mrs Armstrong. During the afternoon two new members were proposed and accepted, and the afternoon closed with ; the singing of the National Anthem.
