CENTENNIAL GATES
OPENING CEREMONY POSTPONED DIGNITY OF STRUCTURE —— Members of the Te Puke Borough Council on Saturday decided, in view of the heavy rain and generally unpleasant weather conditions pre vailing, to postpone the opening ceremony of the Centennial Memorial Gates at the entrance to Jubilee Park until Saturday, February 17, at 3 p.m. By that time, it is anticipated that the iron work for the gates will litjve arrived, and be erected, and also the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, and Mr F. W. Doidge. M.P., who.. both had previous engagements, will be able to attend the ceremony. Dignity has been added to the entrance to the park by the roughcast walls with their smooth inlaid panels and the dates 1840 on one side, -and 19-10 on the other, standing boldly out. At each end of the walls a small cubicle has been incorporated for the sale of tickets at times when the park is used for shows, football matches, and other sporting events. The Maori memorial gates, which stand back from the road down the avenue entrance, appear to be thrown into relief, and the tw r o sets of gates do not clash in any .shape or, form. The design and execution of the centennial gates is evidence of the care and work which have been expended by Messrs C. Perring„ H. Smith, F. Woods and members of the Borough Council works' staff".
