COUNCILLORS discuss EXHIBITION WHAKATANE NOT ON THE MAP

Before the monthly meeting of the Whakatane County Council concluded on Tuesday Cr Lux ton said that he had visited the Centennial Mxhibitmn and could Jind no traces of Whakatane being mentioned there. This, he said, was despite the fact that the council had paid £12i> towards putting Whakatane on the map. In endorsing this complaint, Cr. Spence observed that the only thing lie saw that had any connection at all was an S inch revolving disc. ; He watched this going round and learned that 118,000 cows were milked on the Hangitaiki Plains. (Laughter) . The chairman informed the council that he iiad mentioned the fact of Whakatane's non-appearance to one of the controlling officials at Wellington before the Exhibition was opened and had told him that the County Council had contributed £125. "All he said,' 1 concluded Mr Burnett, "was: 'I can assure you that the money has been well and truly" spent'." (Laughter). Councillor Luxton amplified his earlier remarks and pointed out that smaller places than Whakatane had i been mentioned. However, the only one in the Bay of Plenty was Tauranga, and that place had a card showing its population. "Gisborne has a photograph, with the observation that it is the centre of a sheep-raising district," said the chairman. '"They might have signified that this was a goat-raising district," said Cr MeCready. "Yes, didn't they mention goats?" asked the chairman. "We were the goats to pay £125," observed Cr Luxton, and the counicil collectively roared.
