BREAKING-IN LAND
UP-TO-DATE MACHINERY
SPUR TO PRODUCTION
The Chairman of the Whakatanc County Council, Mr J. L. Burnett, at the monthly meeting held on Tuesday stated that he Avas one of a committee formed to iind out Avliethcr any land in the district could be brought into a productive state with the aid of the up-to-date machinery of the Public Works Department, which has machines capable of knocking doAvn trees, stumping,. etc. "They can take an area which would take a man working on his own a lifetime to bring in," said Mi Burnett, "and break it in in a few months." Mr Burnett suggested that the Councillors should look round in their ridings and if they came across any land on which the machines could be used with profit, to inform him. "HaA-en't the Government land ot their own requiring this sort of thing?" questioned Cr Burt. "Yes," said the chairman, "but not all of it is suitable." Cr McCready: "Before we go meandering all over the county looking for land to break in the machines should be used on farms at present producing, but which could be made to produce more."' "If we get "the unachines in tho district, it would,'have to be work on a fairly big said the chairman . / Cr McGougan : asked Avhat the farmer had to pajy and the chairman advised that thp farmer would be expectcd to con/tribute towards the cost, although ,5t would be only a fraction of the' total.
