A NOVEL REQUEST

MAORIS AND HOTELS REQUEST FOR TEMPORARY CLOSING A suggestion from the Maori subcommittee for the Whakatane Centennial celebrations, that the hotels in town be closed for a short period at mid-day during the festivities, created a poser for the general executive last Thursday evening. Mr A. O. Stewart pointed out that it was feared that many of the younger Maoris treating the day as a gala one, might be tempted to take the celebrations too literally, and become incapable of carrying out their share of the programme. The chairman, Mr B. S. Barry, said that while he sympathised with the suggestion and could understand the reasons for it coming forward, there were two reasons why he thought it impossible to carry out. In the first place, it was not legal for the hotels to close, the day being a holiday, and in the second, he did not think the proprietors would be willing to do so. The meeting however decided to adopt the suggestion of the chairman that a letter be sent to each licensee, suggesting that discretion be exercised in the serving of Maoris with liquor during the Centennial proceedings.
