COMPETITION CRICKET
HILLCREST DEFEATS P. & T. PAROA AND CENTRAL DRAW Rain interfered in both competition games on Saturday, the ParoaCentral fixture played on the Central wicket having to be abandoned shortly after the latter team commenced its innings. At the Domain P. and T. batting first compiled 97 to which Hillcrcst replied with 113 for three wickets, this game then also finishing early owing to the rain. These matches concluded the competition, Paroa proving the winners. The final points were;— Paroa 31 P. and T Hillcrest Whakatane IS Central 1$ ■ THE SCORE BOARD Batting. ! Spring, not out 94 Gillam 36 Bowling. Spring 6 wickets for 48 runs. Hillcrest v P. and T. P. and T. won the toss and elected to bat first. A bad start saw four wickets fall for 15 runs, and three more for 58, but Hudson (28) and Penny (20 not out) again as in tlie first round against Hillcrest, were, responsible for averting a complete collapse, while Wormald (17) and Bennett (14) also contributed useful scores, the innings closing at 97. Spring bowled well, securing six wickets off eight overs for 48 runs. A light drizzle was falling at this stage, severely hampering the fielding and bowling and Spring and Jackson (13) placed (it on the board before the latter was dismissed. Although two further wickets fell Spring maintained a brisk scoring rate being undefeated with 94 out of a total of 119 when stumps were
drawn. The bowling however was good under the conditions, particularly Keepa's who took all three wickets. Details were:— Hillcrest. Paroa v Central. Paroa batted first compiling 125 for seven wickets (declared). H. Grant (25) and Gillain were not separated until 62 runs had been recorded while Bolt (24) and Moore (18) were also associated for a useful third wicket partnership of 41 runs. Wells (17) was the only othe~ batsman to reach double figures. Central had scored only 10 runs for the loss of one wicket when rain interfered and the game was abandoned. Details were: — Paroa H.
