SEA PHENOMENON
ACRES OF DISCOLOURED WATER
AREA OF WHALE ISLAND
Excursionists to Whale Island last Sunday were surprised when a few miles offshore to encounter a wide area of mud coloured water. So thick was the discolouration thai it was possible to obtain a line sil 1 * I'rom a bucketful of water Avhich had been pickcd up from over the side of the launch. There Avere literally acres of the phenomenon the surface of the sea assuming a dirty brown appearance. At one spot it Avas possible to discern a heavy column of dark disturbances AA'hich Avas assumed lo be the centre of the activity. As there has been no other indication of any submarine activity in the A r icinity and as it lias been impossible to sec White Island owing ;to the overcast weather ol" late, the cause of the discolouration of so large an area of sea lias given rise to considerable conjecture.
